Jianzhi Wu, a freshman at East Tennessee State University, recently took third prize at the Monolov International Piano Competition held in Garden City, New York. She is a student of Yi-Yang Chen, assistant professor of piano and music theory in the ETSU Department of Music, who was a member of the program faculty and gave an open talk during the event.
The classical music competition, in which contestants between ages 7 and 18 are encouraged to play works by Bulgarian composers, is held at the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Garden City. This year’s jury, comprised of world-renowned musicians, was led by Marc Silverman, chairman of the Manhattan School of Music in New York.
