Our Presenters:

We are pleased to welcome Doreen Hall to share with us at our Teacher Enrichment Workshop! Ms. Hall is a composer and the creator of Paloma Piano LLC where she blogs about piano teaching and publishes music as well as maintains a blog for parents, Pianoparents.net. She is the Author of two books, “The Happiest Piano Teacher in Town” and “The Ultimate Preschool Piano Activities Book.”

Doreen has been teaching the piano for over 35 years. She received her degree in Music Theory and Composition from the State University College at Fredonia, and attended graduate school at Adelphi University in New York. Doreen’s teaching certifications include early childhood education and music education K-12. She has 16 years of classroom experience.

In addition to teaching, composing, and writing, Doreen serves as an accompanist in the Cleveland, Ohio area. Doreen’s teaching and writing focus on maintaining a positive mindset. She wants to remind all teachers that the job we do makes a huge difference in people’s lives and in the world.

Her presentation Teach-Play-Love will cover such topics as:

  • How to create a clear and inspiring mission statement.

  • How to have a studio that truly reflects your personality, teaching style, and values.

  • How to attract students that are a good fit for your expectations.

  • How to educate students and parents about the piano learning process.

  • How to create and enforce a studio policy that balances teaching and the rest of life.

  • How to create a teaching “Roadmap” that will take your students to the highest level possible.

We are also pleased to welcome Yi-Yang Chen as he shares Strategies in Selecting Piano Repertoire to Maximize Motivation and Musicality in the 21st Century.  He will dive deeper into why students may lose interest quickly in their repertoire, and how the combination of standard repertoire and rare pieces may help a student stay motivated. He will elaborate on how rediscovering less performed music may help to maximize motivation, while allowing for structure and exposure to standard repertoire. His intention is to increase awareness and understanding of contemporary music because of how it reflects the values of today’s society. Mr. Chen will conduct a master class in the afternoon.

Yi-Yang Chen shot onto the international stage with back-to-back victories in 2018 Sussex International Piano Competition, 2017 Washington International Competition, and the Waring International Piano Competition.  Yi-Yang Chen is the assistant professor of piano and music theory at East Tennessee State University since 2017. Born in Taipei, Taiwan, Chen has been playing the piano since the age of 8. He holds a Master of Music from The Juilliard School, where he studied with Robert McDonald and Jerome Lowenthal. Chen is currently a doctoral candidate in Piano Performance at the Eastman School of music, where he also received the Bachelor of Music degree- studying under Douglas Humpherys. A wealth of experience enables Chen to become an outstanding teacher and performer. As winner of the 2012 MTNA National Young Artist Piano Competition, Chen was given a Steinway piano and two concerts in Miami sponsored by the Chopin Foundation (USA) as his prize. Yi-Yang Chen is a member of Music Teachers National Association, College Music Society, and Mu Phi Epsilon. He enjoys swimming, biking, traveling, and composing. Yi-Yang is currently working on a recording project with Champs Hill label (UK), and the release is scheduled for 2021.
